Party planners wanted

Hey Fanshawe!

I'm Kendra, your newly elected vice-president of external and academic affairs!

Now, some of you may be wondering, “What does the VP of external and academic affairs do?” When I first found out about the position, I wasn't too sure either. After some pre-election research, I found out what the position involves. The VP of external and academic affairs deals with “anything outside of the union and academic appeals.” Oh ... riiiiiiiight, it's so much clearer now.

That statement makes little sense when you're outside of “The Union.” Here is what I found out: the Fanshawe Student Union is a completely separate entity from Fanshawe College. This means that when I'm dealing with “anything outside of the Union” I'm sitting on committees representing the students' voice to various groups the FSU works with such as the college, the community and the advocacy organization, the College Student Alliance. What about the “academic appeals” though? This was the easier part. If you feel like you have been marked unfairly and have tried to talk to your instructor about the problem, you can email me and we will start the appeal process. The appeal process includes talking to your program chair. If that's not successful, the next step would be talking to your dean. Lastly, we could possibly bring the case to a “committee of review” (think of that as the supreme court of grade appeals).

I also work with a lot of policies. I read and research what issues could affect our school, and I sit in on quite a few meetings to represent you. This year, they've also given me a few other things to work on. I'm assisting with the class representative program, the student administrative council and planning the charity ball!

The charity ball is a student-planned, semi-formal event held on February 5 in the Oasis. All the money raised goes to a chosen charity — it's a party for a cause! But I need your help to make this happen. I'm looking for several volunteers who would like to help plan out this event. Planning anything like the theme or décor, picking the charity and helping to run the event. This is not only a fun event to help setup and complete, it also looks amazing on a resume.

The charity ball committee members will need to help set up earlier, and tear down afterwards and possibly work small sections of the ball, like coat check, for short periods of time. This is a great opportunity to get involved and leave a bit of a legacy, you'll always have “that time I helped plan the most awesome charity ball ever!” Right? Absolutely!

If you are interested in joining the planning committee, we are having a meeting on November 9 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in SC2016 (above the Oasis, across the hall from the Student Union office). Please bring your schedule and some theme and charity ideas!

Thank you so much Fanshawe for giving me all of these opportunities by voting me in. Feel free to email me at fsuexternal@fanshawec.ca. Let your voice be heard. Be sure to come out to the meeting on November 9 at 5 p.m., and here's to looking forward to a great year!
