Falcons bring home OCAA gold and bronze

It's been raining gold and bronze lately in the Fanshawe athletics department.

The Fanshawe Falcons men's and women's soccer teams captured OCAA glory at the league championships with the men's team winning the bronze medal, and the women's team winning the gold medal.

The women's team got the scoring going in the first half off the foot of Alana Cornet, and it turned out to be all they needed. The team held on throughout the second half, and tender Emily Gillet, who won the top Goalkeeper award, made some key saves and posted the clean sheet in the final game to keep the lead for Fanshawe and help guide the team to a 1-0 victory over Durham.

The player of the game was given to the lone goal scorer Cornet, who was also named as a tournament all-star in a very exciting weekend for her. The overall tournament MVP award went to Fanshawe mid-fielder, Erin Hemming.

The team has now earned the top Ontario seed at the 2009 Big Kahuna/Adidas CCAA Women's National Soccer Championship, which will be hosted by Humber College.

On the men's side, they defeated Humber as well, to claim the bronze medal. After falling 1-0 to Algonquin College in the semi-final, the team was firing on all cylinders in their 2-0 victory over Humber.

Defender's Ivan Mishv and Steve Hepton scored the goals for Fanshawe, in the first and second half respectively. While the player of the game honors went to striker Milos Janikic for his outstanding play throughout.

The bronze medal caps off a 7-2-2 regular season for the Falcons that saw them claim top spot in the West Division.

This marked the first OCAA men's soccer medal for the Fanshawe Falcons since they won the bronze back in the 2003-04 season.
