Women's volleyball team finding their way

A new chapter has begun, written in the archives of Fanshawe volleyball history, as the female Falcons volleyball team come full stride into their new season.

The female Falcons had a disappointing week following their season opener. After winning the first set of their game against the St. Clair Saints, the Saints turned around the performance into a 3-1 set loss for the Falcons. This is a bit of a letdown for this team, but spirits remain high, as do team expectations.

Head coach Lloyd Rumble is confident that the ladies can keep their chins high and continue to play their hardest in the games to come.

“Wednesday should be very competitive,” said Rumble, “Redeemer University has some experience over us as well, but we have had some excellent training sessions this week so I expect a good result.”

This confidence was an undertone in all the points stressed by Rumble. From their playing skill in the tournament to the upcoming game against Redeemer, there is a definite excitement about the skill and potential that this squad has. Especially because 11 of the 16 players are first year students, showing the experience level of this fairly new team. Tuesday was a building opportunity for the team, as it identified some areas that needed to be addressed by the team.

“We made a lot of rookie mistakes Tuesday,” stated Rumble. “We had an opportunity to win set three but made some key errors you might expect to surface under pressure when you have so many new teammates. A couple of players had OK performances but some players definitely had off nights. You can't go soft technically or mentally in pressure situations.”

So they are off to their training regiment, with more fervour than before, as they move forward in hopes of seeing a medal match at provincials.
