Who is Arjun Bhardwaj?

I looked into the mirror and asked my reflection, “Who are you?” My image replied, “ I certainly don't expect to explain in a sentence or two the almost impossible multiplex personality that Arjun Bhardwaj is sometimes noble, sometimes basic, at times stupid but occasionally spewing words of wisdom; now utterly selfish and then generously charitable….I could go on. I live on many planes -- physical, social and emotional, psychic, spiritual…….the variations being many, I have named the chief of these only. I will throw some light on them.

“The physical plane is the most important and easily understood in this materialistic world, for it gives me an entity and an identity as Arjun Bhardwaj. I will elaborate.”

“Knowledge is power, I understood early in my youth and it inspired me to do my Masters in Mass Communication (the pen is mightier than the sword!) in India and then I came to the land of coffee cups and hockey pucks—Canada, to do a Certificate Course in Corporate Communications and Public Relations, and later on enrolled in the Concierge Services program. During my time at Fanshawe College, London (Alas! How swiftly the days have flown!) I felt inspired to write for their weekly newspaper. It was an exhilarating and enlightening experience.

“I learnt not to restrict my education to the classroom only. With my eyes open and ears pricked I absorbed everything that came my way. My thirst for learning and a craving to interact with people won me a lot of knowledge and a host of wonderful friends within a short span of time. Every man has a heart and if you can reach it you can make the world a happier place. I think I try to reach a person's heart and it is the secret of my joy. That is the reason I never experienced the much talked about cultural shock either in England or in Canada. Under our skin, I believe all human beings are essentially the same, traditions may differ, but the culture of the heart is governed by the universal traits of humanity and are the same all over the world. Whether working with my classmates on a project or being an insignificant cog in the Alumni Office or a team member of no consequence at the CAS or United Way of London and Middlesex, it has been one long stretch of delight. While doing my scheduled work I was as happy as a lark and looked forward to my work program. Accommodation, adjustment and service with a smile has been the mantra of the teams I worked with.

”I think the turning point in my life was when I was conferred with the Fresher of the Year Award in the University in India. Before that I was shy, withdrawn and an introvert living in the shadow of my extrovert sister.

“On the social and emotional plane I have not one identity, but many. I am a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend…..an atmosphere of love, amiability, bon homie and camaraderie pervades this plane. Since love is innate in my nature and friendship is important for me it is natural for me to love everybody and seek love from them. I have a friendly and happy disposition and that is the reason I am in love with life. However, on this plane I am also a materialist, an idealist, an epicurean, an ascetic, a moralist and individualist.

“The psychic plane is where only I know my mental perception of myself. The consciousness is vast and areas many which have to be discovered and mapped in their completeness. One life is too short to accomplish all this.

“On the spiritual level I don't even try to know who I am. Seers and sages for years have tried to find an answer to the question, ‘Who am I?' They have walked into their graves groping for the answer. It is sufficient to know that I am a microscopically minute speck of no consequence in the vast universe. The thought humbles me!”

Arjun Bhardwaj is a Fanshawe College graduate and works in the college's Alumni Office as a student assistant.
