Toronto-based hip-hop artist KILLY is headlining Fanshawe's Frosh Week.

KILLY is a multi-talented hiphop artist from Toronto, Ont. His newest project, Light Path 8, is performing well and the young rapper is preparing for a short U.S./Canada tour. However, before KILLY can fly out to Arizona to begin the tour, he will be kicking things off right here at Fanshawe.

That’s right, the certified platinum “Killamonjaro” rapper will be headlining this year’s frosh week. The concert will take place in the SUB Courtyard on Sept.10 and the tickets are included in your frosh kits. You can find more information on the event on the Facebook event page or fsu.ca/eventinfo/frosh-concert.

Interrobang spoke to Tyler Hetherington, the Fanshawe Student Union’s (FSU) events and program coordinator, about the upcoming frosh week.

“This year Frosh Week is jampacked with events. Monday night we launch Season three of our eSports league FUEL (Fanshawe ultimate eSports league). Tuesday is the big show with KILLY. Wednesday is our ever-popular paint party, this year headlined by Delaney Jane. Thursday is another Frosh Show headlined by Fateh Doe, who is a Desi hip-hop and Bhangra artist. Friday is a cultural celebration of the Autumn Moon Festival. So basically, we have something for everyone during that week for students to do.”

Frosh is of course targeted to new students, but it is for everyone. This is great news to those who are not new students but were still hoping for a chance to see KILLY.

“There might be a small amount [of tickets] available on September 3. If so, they will be available at the Biz Booth, The Hub and online,” said Hetherington about additional tickets to the KILLY show.

KILLY caught the emo-rap wave at the right time. Mixing that style with his OVO-Torontonian perspective results in a brooding yet energetic performance.

“I know he puts on a wild live show and we can’t wait for him to celebrate a new semester with our amazing Fanshawe students,” said Hetherington.

KILLY furthers his experimentation with very lively performances in order to add a physicality to his music. Emotion, physicality and hot beats are what drives KILLY’s music. To further the rapper’s pedigree, he has already received a Juno music award nomination and has even been featured on Drake’s OVO radio station.

Even if hip-hop is not your thing, this is going to be a fun concert with the general goal of celebrating the start of a new school year.

“It’s especially important for those first-year students who are experiencing ‘real life’ for the first time. A lot of students at these shows will find some lifelong friends.”

Since a lot of new students have a hard time meeting people, Frosh Week is as Tyler puts it, “a great way to get involved with the FSU early and meet and interact with some great students and staff”.

Frosh week is going to be lots of fun this year, kick it off with KILLY!
