Chat With Nat - What's your priority: social life or school work?

Dear Nat,
It's the first day of school and I'm already feeling overwhelmed. Since I'm a full-time student, my schedule's packed, but I want to have fun too. I don't mean to sound like a “keener,” but I want to have both a social life while also keeping my grades up. Any advice as to how I can balance both? What's more important here?
Social Keener

Dear Social Keener,
Think of it this way: Without passing grades, you won't be part of Fanshawe's community for much longer, and without Fanshawe's community, your goal of attaining a college social life will go kaput, so definitely keep an eye on your marks.

But becoming a hermit during your time here will be as much of a disservice to you as flunking out. Yes, good grades are important, but so is establishing good connections. Ever heard of the phrase, “Getting a job is all about who you know?” Well, this couldn't be truer, and chances are, your peers will one day be your colleagues or even your boss. It's important to make these connections now in an effort to pave your networking system for the future.

With this in mind, it's good to socialize and have fun but remember to do it tastefully. Most people won't want the nickname “Loosey Goosey Lucy” or “Beer Gut Barry” to follow them into their careers. So be classy not trashy — the freaky phenomenon of six degrees of separation happens more frequently than you might think.

Finally, properly managing your time will increase productivity throughout your day. A simple, general rule that I've heard people use is by splitting the day up into thirds: eight hours of work, eight hours of play and eight hours of sleep. Sounds simple, right? Try to stick close to these guidelines and you'll have the best of both worlds.

So go ahead, spread your social butterfly wings and make the most of your time here at Fanshawe.
