Health, Body and Fitness: The do's and don'ts of gym etiquette

Machine hogs, flirting, 15 minutes showers — we have all done it at one point or another — but not in the gym. When working out at a health and fitness club, you have to keep in mind that you are not the only person there; the gym is a social environment and everyone is there for their own reasons. With Valentine's Day around the corner, we all want to look and feel our best — but try to save the flirting for outside of the gym this February. Here are the top do's and don'ts of gym etiquette.

Obey the Rules: This may sound simple and easy to follow, but many people don't understand that when the sign says "Please respect the 30-minute cardio rule," it means get the heck off once you hit 30 minutes. If the gym is not busy, feel free to stay on longer, but if it is and you are having trouble getting someone else to share, ask an employee. Keep in mind that the other people working out are your peers and they may be your next employer or co-worker. Asking an employee to help you to get someone to share equipment will help to prevent conflict from occurring between peers.

Treat Trainers with Respect: At the end of the day, personal trainers are there to help you. With that being said, every trainer is different; some are soft and soothing while others are more aggressive. If you are working with someone who doesn't mesh with your personality as desired, approach your health and fitness facility and ask them to set you up with another trainer who is better suited to your style and personality.

The Gym is Not a Dating Pool: You look across the gym and see that six-pack or pretty face you've been eyeing the last few days. By all means, introduce yourself, but resist the urge to make small talk in the form of flirting. For the most part, people go to the gym to spend time alone, working on their bodies and goals — chances are that six-pack didn't show up without a lot of hard work and dedication.

Now that the top three do's and don'ts of gym etiquette have been set out, let's take a look at the do's and don'ts recommended by fans of Fusion Bodybuilding, a supplement provider and supporter to bodybuilders everywhere. Here is what some of the fans had to say:

- Put your weight away when you are done — and set them down gently. Just because you can bench 300 doesn't mean the 100-pound high school kid can — put your weights back.

- Take your 'rests' standing up, away from the bench — then someone else can use it in between your sets.

- Leave your cell phone at home — it is distracting to others and you should be spending your quality time at the gym to yourself!

- The mirror is there for you to check your form — not to check out other men and women.
