The Heel Turn: Impact Wrestling remains in flux

It seems to be the best of times and the worst of times right now for TNA, which recently rebranded itself as Impact Wrestling. The XDivision got a much-needed boost with the addition of Austin Aries, Kid Kash, Jesse Sorensen, Mark Haskins and Zema Ion. All these athletes — Aries in particular — have brought some attention and excitement back to the stagnant division. Considering that the X-Division is one of the cornerstones that TNA was founded on, it's great to see these guys getting more time to showcase their talent and prove that wrestling isn't just for the heavyweights.

Some former Knockouts have been brought back into action, such as Traci Brooks, ODB and Jackie. The latter two were storyline competing for Impact Wrestling contracts and likely will be around for awhile, as they've had a vicious feud happening with Velvet Sky. These women being re-hired is another excellent thing for the company, as the Knockouts division was hurting from too many talent losses. Perhaps this will lead to some other former Knockouts being brought back, like Hamada and Roxxi, another pair that shouldn't have been let go in the first place.

The problem is that while the two above-mentioned divisions have been improving, Vince Russo's writing has not. That will hardly be a surprise to long-time viewers who have followed Russo's infamous storylines throughout WCW and the WWE. I'll give him credit for coming up with what could be interesting angles from time to time. What Russo fails to do more often than not is see these storylines through to a logical climax. Often they are abruptly dropped and fans are apparently supposed to forget that something even happened. The big Fortune versus Immortal storyline is a prime example: Kurt Angle brought Scott Steiner back in to help the war against Hogan's regime, Steiner basically didn't provide any help at all, and now he's a card-carrying member of the very group he was supposed to destroy.

A more recent incident concerns Traci Brooks. She has been cozying up to Bischoff in the hopes of getting back her position as Knockout Law, and it's heavily implied that she's been giving "favours" to Bischoff. The issue with this is that just months ago, her marriage to Kaz was publically acknowledged on the show, so either that never happened, or Traci is storyline "cheating" on Kaz.

Die-hard wrestling fans have good memories, and Russo would do well to respect that fact. Perhaps it's time for Dixie Carter to go searching for another head writer to replace Russo, as too much of his work ends up going nowhere. Carter seems reluctant to relieve Russo of his duties, and some accounts describe her as being too "nice" for the wrestling business. Sometimes you have to make hard decisions in this business to protect it. Sometimes people like Matt and Jeff Hardy have to go in order to protect the integrity of the business.

Carter just needs to learn how to stick to those decisions, and the upcoming return of Jeff Hardy proves that maybe she is too "nice" after all.
