Women's season comes to a dramatic end

The Fanshawe Falcons women's basketball team's season went out with a bang.

The ladies travelled to Georgian College to play in their first playoff game on February 26. The women didn't have the success they were looking for, and dropped a close decision to the hosts.

The team didn't have the season they were expecting going into the new year. They struggled, but were able to sneak into the playoffs in sixth place in the OCAA West division, which gave them the first-round match with the thirdplace Georgian team.

If the team had won the game against Georgian, they would have advanced to the final eight tournament in Niagara. Since they failed to do that, their season came to an end, as did the career of guard Kaitlind Dutrizac.

The fourth-year leader of the team's remarkable career concluded with the loss, and although the season is over, she said she enjoyed her time at Fanshawe and had fun playing basketball. As the mentor on the team this year, Dutrizac was able to show the younger players what is needed to be done to win games. According to coach Matt White, "Kaitlind is a leader and any coach would be lucky to have her." With all the praise and leadership she showed this year, she was unable to go out on top, but said that Fanshawe basketball will be good for years to come.

The women are done for this year, but they will be back again next year and look to improve on what was a learning experience.
