Fanshawe Falcons honoured with awards

The 41st Annual Athletics Awards Night could have been a throwback to 2006 for all intents and purposes, with a repeat of athlete's of the year in both the men's and women's category getting recognition.

The reception, held in the Oasis on April 11, included a dinner buffet, an awards presentation, and the emcee tag-team of current FSU president, Travis Mazereeuw and his successor, Jonathan Hillis.

The 2007-2008 athletic season was a successful one for the Falcons who brought home three OCAA championships, five OCAA medals, as well as two CCAA medals. In terms of individual recognition, four Fanshawe athletes were named CCAA All-Canadians; Greg Remjin (men's soccer); Emily Costello (women's soccer); John Mason (cross-country); Katie Seys (volleyball).

The big award, athlete of the year, was saved for the end. The winners, women's soccer captain, Costello; and cross-country standout Mason, had both previously won the award in 2006.

Other notable athletic milestones included Nathaniel Allard's fourth straight OCAA badminton gold medal, Hillis' record of 13 blocks in an OCAA volleyball match, and the cross-country team having achieved being the only CCAA team to have medaled in the past three consecutive nationals.
