T'is the Macy's season

I could not think of a more perfect store to write about around Christmas time than the mega successful Macy's.

Macy's, an American institute of shopping, is not only busseling with shoppers this time of year, it also gives back to the community and shares their successes and includes everyone.

The following are events Macy's puts on for the cities to enjoy, as well as their efforts to raise funds for different charities;

- For over 80 years, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has continued to be the official kick-off of the holiday season.

- Event called Macy's Passport, The latest trends in pop culture, fashion and music and dance blend to benefit an important issue — finding a cure for HIV/AIDS. For the past 26 years Passport has raised more than $27 million for HIV/AIDS research, care, and prevention and education programs.

- On the eighth floor of Macy's Herald Square, Macy's Santaland, Over 300,000 people visit Santaland each year

- Macy's has the world's largest fireworks display that is now televised in front of millions for the Fourth of July.

- Tree lighting ceremony in San Francisco that's been going on for 17 years now. All the proceeds go to the UCSF Children's Hospital for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. Time line of Macy's iconic History

- In 1858 Rowland Hussey Macy opened what they called a ‘fancy dry food store in New York City.

- The most recognizable retail trademark is the red Macy's star, which replaced a rooster. The idea for the red star came from a tattoo Rowland had on his arm.

- In 1862 Macy's was the first store to have an in-store Santa, which set a high standard for all future department stores to come.

- In 1864 Macy's was the first retailer to have elaborate windows displays.

- In 1902 Macy's moves uptown in New York Herald Square. This new store, which was nine stories consisted of 33 elevators and four escalators (the first American store to use them). The original wooden escalators can still be found there to this day.

- 1924 Macy's in Heralds Square is declared the “world's largest store.”

- In 1947 the classic film ‘Miracle on 34th Street', had a story line that has Macy's being the only store with the true Santa Claus there.

- Skip ahead to 2006 and Macy's have over 800 locations in the nation and still continues to grow and be a successful brand.

For the Christmas 2008 Macy's “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” commercial ‘Believe' theme incorporates big names such as Jessica Simpson, Donald Trump and Martha Stewart, telling kids that Santa Claus does exist because he stands for kindness and generosity. There is a Macy's Santa Mail letterbox in which Macy's will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for each letter they receive.
