Impressive soccer seasons come to an unjust end

With much of the athletic attention now being focused on basketball here at Fanshawe, the men's and women's soccer teams were quietly getting their job done, despite not being in the spotlight.

The men's team burst into the playoffs this season with high expectations after a 9-1-1 regular season record. The only regular season defeat came at the hands of Sheridan by a score 1-0 early in the season. Since that loss the team went on a winning streak, and didn't lose a game in seven straight on the way to a first place finish in the West Division. Entering the playoffs as a top seed, the Fanshawe men's soccer team fell short in the quarterfinals with a 2-0 loss to Seneca.

Despite the early playoff exit, it was a successful season for the men's team that hasn't won an OCAA championship since 1996/97. Matt Szydlowski was the go-to guy for the Falcons scoring an amazing 12 goals in 11 games.

The hardware was racked in this year at Fanshawe as well.

Szydlowski brought home Rookie of the Year honours in the West/Central West Division. He also made the all-star Team, along with Osei-Poko Boatang.

Coach Paul D'Hollander was winner of Coach of the Year for the West/Central West division, and was the league nominee for CCAA Coach of the Year.

Fanshawe won Best Defensive Team in the West Division, to go along with that goaltenders Robert Dashou and Mark Hayes took home the West/Central West Division Goalie of the Year honours.

The Fanshawe Men's soccer team is looking to build off this performance heading into next year and is hoping to dethrone four-time champion Algonquin.

The Fanshawe women's team put together an impressive season as well. A 5-2-3 record had the team in the playoffs. Just like the men's soccer team, it was Seneca playing the devils advocate knocking out Fanshawe in the quarterfinals 3-1.

It was a rebuilding season for the team who were champions just two years ago. Alana Cornet led the Falcons in scoring, putting eight behind the other team's keeper in 10 games this year.

The hardware was also racked in by the women's team this year. With 0.80 GPG, Cornet was the scoring champion of the West Division. Defense wins championships and though the Falcons didn't win the championship, they were honoured with having the Best Defensive Team in the West Division. With her great year Cornet earned a spot on the all-star team, joining her was Emily Gillet.

Impressive performances this year from both Falcon squads as they look to build on the successes of this season and bring home the big trophy next year.
