Runners bring home the gold, look for more at Nationals

Fanshawe's Cross Country team crossed the finish line of the season and the Falcon women's team brought home gold at the OCAA Provincial Championships for the first time since 1996-97.

Runners braved the mud and rain soaked course in Ancaster, which was hosted by Redeemer University College and Mohawk College, for the Ontario College Atheletic Association Provincial Championships on Saturday, October 25.

Fanshawe's own Tineke deJong finished second in the 5 km race with a time of 21:36, while third-place finisher Becky Pieterson, also from Fanshawe, ran the course in 21:42.

First place went to Dawn Martin of Brockville's St. Lawrence College, who had a time of 20:55.

Fanshawe's second and third placing solidified the women's team as front-runners for the OCAA Provincial Championships.

In the 8 km men's race the duel was between Fanshawe and Conestoga College. Overall, the Falcon men placed second, with the performance of Mike Scipio, crossing the line with a time of 29:32 and in fifth place, and John Mason, who finished only seconds behind in sixth with a time of 29:37.

The silver OCAA placing for the men's team marks their fourth consecutive placing at a provincial competition.

Together as a team, the men and women brought home top honours by being named Top Overall College Team.

The runners will take their winning streak to the Canadian College Athletics Association National Cross Country Championships which will be held on Saturday November 8 at St. Lawrence College in Kingston.
