DVD Review: Annoyance, not tension caused by new horror flick

We all need more horror in our lives this time of year, right? Sure we do! That's why I needed to see High Tension. It's the movie that Lions Gate picked up so we could see it in our part of the world. High Tension was shot in France, so the dialogue in the North American version is overdubbed — there isn't much dialogue though, and when there is, it is matched pretty well to the character's mouths.

High TensionThe story follows two ladies on their trip back to a quiet countryside location to visit family. Like any good horror movie, the story takes a little while to get moving, but I have to say that I thought that the beginning of the movie took a little too long to get things rolling for my taste.

Night falls and from there the carnage really picks up. I've seen some gory movies in my time, and this one is not for the squeamish. Horror buffs won't find anything they haven't seen before, but the effects are really well done.

If you've heard any buzz about this movie it's probably about the ending. I'm not going to give anything away but I have to say it made me angry that I sat through this show for an hour and a half and found the twist was totally ridiculous. It ruined the movie for me.

There aren't very many extras on this DVD so all you collector's edition nuts who foam at the mouth for this stuff will be disappointed.

I still suggest that you at least rent the movie to check out the awesome gory scenes and make the decision for yourselves if the ending sucks. I'm just warning you, if you like twist endings, you'll probably think of about 10 ways that would have made better endings. I give this film 5 out of 10.
