Stiller satirizes Hollywood

Tropic Thunder

With laughs and action like this it's no wonder that Tropic Thunder was a huge hit.

Imagine a film shooting going horribly wrong. Now multiply that by 10, and you will get what one day on set of the newest action movie would be like.

Rookie director, Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan), has been given a cast of self-righteous divas for the leading roles of a new war movie based on real people in history. Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller) is a soon to be “has been” actor, playing the same role over, and over again in painful sequels. Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black) is the funny man, with an addiction problem. Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) is the method actor who has, and who can, play every role, including a African American man after he gets surgery to darken the pigment of his skin.

With the lead actors always fighting for attention on set, and arguing about the way that scenes should be done, Damien turns to advice from war veteran and author of the book that inspired the movie. Four Leaf Tayback (Nick Nolte), brave, tough and armless, advises the director to put real fear into the actors' eyes. Taking his advice, Damien decides to take the actors out into the bush, leave them there with a map and a scene list, while putting little cameras all through the forest to make the movie feel more real. What he doesn't know is that he has actually dropped the actors off in a hostile territory run by a heroin producing gang called the Flaming Dragons.

Real shooting, separations and kidnappings, force these spoiled actors to turn on their inner instincts, ultimately displaying their bravery and commitment to their roles.

This movie was very funny. Tropic Thunder begins with fake trailers for movies starring the characters from the actual movie, which was a fun way to learn the back story of the characters. The action in the movie was great and really added to the overall enjoyment of the movie. Stiller and Black were funny as usual, but it was really nice to see the lighter side of Robert Downey Jr. Canadian actor Jay Baruchel (Knocked Up), was also good. I am happy that he is making his impact on comedy. Does anyone else remember him from “Popular Mechanics for Kids” with Elisha Cuthbert? I recommend this movie to anyone who likes comedies, and the classic humour provided by Ben Stiller and Jack Black.

Final Words: Saw it. Liked it. Swallow the gravy.
