Letter of the Week: To “e” or not to “e”

“I think if you are going to do a poll about two celebrities, you should spell their names correct. How are you and your editors getting away with constantly NOT EDITTING (sic) your material. I would've failed out by now if I slacked as much as you people.”

This excerpt is from an email that made its way into my inbox over the weekend, and I thought I should explain the apparent blunder.

From time to time, the FSU newsroom can get a little hectic, as most newsrooms are. And in the frantic hours before the paper goes to press, the Interrobang staff try to divide their time between receiving late submissions, fixing malfunctioning equipment (think Office Space) and checking the final draft of the paper for errors. And we, like all of you, make mistakes sometimes. The same can be said for the FSU website, although the process of getting the paper and the website up to par are controlled by different people in different roles.

The letter we received claimed that the names posted on the FSU website were misspelled, referring specifically to the comic poll. Since I know that Jamie Kennedy is spelled correctly, I can only assume the letter writer was referring to Pauley Shore; I imagine the confusion is over the belief that Pauley is spelled without the “e” that we included.

This anonymous reader is wrong, I'm afraid. In fact, the Internet Movie Database clearly states that Pauly Shore is sometimes credited as Pauley with the extra “e” and even occasionally as Eugene Shore. This is a case where there is more than one right answer; and certainly not an example of any FSU staff members slacking off.
