Nanny Diaries goes beyond typical coming-of-age tale

The Nanny Diaries

Need a refresher course on why becoming a nanny might not be the best idea? Then watch this movie.

The Nanny Diaries follows Annie Braddock (Scarlett Johansson), a business graduate who minored in anthropology, her true passion. She is suddenly faced with the real world and when asked the simple question “Who is Annie Braddock?” she runs from her future, right into a world and a job that looks deceivingly easier on the outside, as Nanny in the Upper East Side of New York City.

The film takes an interesting approach by having Johansson's character narrate events as if she was writing a research paper about raising children around the world, emphasizing the ridiculousness of paying someone else to raise your children. Annie guides us through the enchanting and glamorous world of her employers, Mr. and Mrs. X, neither of whom “have time” to spend with their son Grayer. She soon realizes that being a Nanny isn't as easy as she thought and struggles to connect with the boy, but when she finally does, it comes with a price.

The self-involved Mrs. X (Laura Linney) lures you in with smiles and promises about the good life but quickly pulls a 180 and becomes a manipulative shop-a-holic. Although, somehow in the middle of hating her, you pity her because of her obsession with pleasing her cheating husband.

Chris Evans (Fantastic Four) plays Annie's the love interest, who complicates things, but also shows her the down side of living a privileged life. Alicia Keys and Donna Murphy (Spiderman 2) both do an excellent job in their supporting roles, standing out without taking the spot light.

I really enjoyed this movie because I could relate to Annie's overwhelming feelings toward her future. Scarlett Johansson does an excellent job at making the audience feel everything she was struggling with, which is what makes the movie exceptional. Even though there were no big surprises or twists, it wasn't at all predictable or boring. I definitely recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for a feel good movie that pulls at your heart strings.

Final Words: Saw it. Liked it. Will definitely rent it.
