Combating London's student housing issues

Representatives from Fanshawe, Western and surrounding colleges and universities attended a two-day conference here in London last week to address what Londoners see as “student issues,” including rowdiness, alcohol consumption and housing conflict within the campus areas.

College reps, as well as housing developers, London police and security within the community where asked to attend this information session where a plan of action was taken in order to improve the quality of living among students and family residences.

The Town and Gown Committee, which organized the gathering, felt a need to get landlords more involved in the discussion in order to create a more comfortable environment, as many claim the landlords are not taking responsibility for their tenants and according to FSU president, Travis Mazereeuw, a Landlord's License will soon be required before an individual can lease out rooms to students, which may affect the availability of housing units.

This license will make Landlords personally responsible for the actions of tenants who cause damage to the property or are involved with police or security. This will hopefully put more pressure on the housing owners to be more involved with the tenants, as well as stricter rules and regulations for those renting out the units.

The Town and Gown committee will return on June 6 to further address issues in order to improve living in London.
