College responds to letter

Re: “Open letter to Fanshawe College staff and students”, March 26, 2007, submitted by the Canadian Arab Federation

Dear Mr. Boudjenane, Executive Director, Canadian Arab Federation

You recently wrote Dr. Howard Rundle, Mr. Ian Darling, and Ms. Emily Marcoccia at Fanshawe College. A copy of your letter was also published in the March 23rd edition of the student newspaper, the Interrobang.

Dr. Rundle is currently away from the College so please accept my reply in his stead.

Fanshawe College is very disheartened by your accusation that an incident at a recent College event was “racially motivated”. Racism is not tolerated at Fanshawe College. In fact, as a culturally rich institution we are very proud of our student and staff diversity which includes members from over one hundred and fifty countries around the world.

In addition to having a Fanshawe College Human Rights policy which reflects Canadian law, we have a Respectful College Community Policy, a Safe College Campus Policy, a Student Code of Conduct, and a Mission Statement supporting our diverse communities.

While we are not at liberty to share personal information pertaining to a student, I can tell you that the incident you are referring to was in no way racially motivated. Also, the newspaper you are referring to is not an official publication of the College, although it is a paper owned and operated by the Fanshawe Student Union.

The matter you are referring to has been reviewed by officials and the College maintains that the overall safety, security, respect, and rights of all students were maintained.

If, at any time, a member of the College community believes that his or her rights have not been adhered to, they are encouraged to follow the process of inquiry or official complaint, as per the College's multiple policies. These policies are accessible in several areas of the College such as the Library, through our Human Resources Department, the Ombuds Office, and though the Student Union.

As educational administrators we share your desire “to fight negative stereotyping and to end systemic discrimination and racism”.

Sincerely,
L. Joy Warkentin
Senior Vice-President, Academic
