Iraq - A car bomb and a suicide bomber killed 60 people and wounded 110 more, including many students, who were blown up as they waited for cars to take them home at the entrance to a university in Baghdad. The bombings were one of a string of attacks across Baghdad on Tuesday as the government prepared to launch a major security crackdown in the capital. The attacks also come the day after the execution of two of Saddam Hussein's aides which fueled anger among his fellow Sunni Arabs.

Columbia - Police have captured a suspected top member of Colombia's biggest drug cartel, following a shoot-out. Eugenio Montoya, who also is known as Don Hugo, is alleged to be a leader of the Norte del Valle group. He denies being a drug trafficker.

The FBI lists the group as the most powerful and violent drug-trafficking organization in Colombia. Montoya's capture has ended a lengthy manhunt in which the US had offered a $5m reward for his arrest.

Louisiana - Rescued after Hurricane Katrina as a baby embryo frozen in liquid nitrogen, little Noah Benton Markham was born on Tuesday, January 16, weighing in at approximately eight pounds and six ounces.

Two weeks after Katrina hit, officials used flat-bottom boats to rescue the Markham's embryos, with some 1,400 others stored in tanks at New Orleans' Lakeland Hospital.
