We can all learn from Chappell Roan prioritizing her mental health
None of us truly understand how it feels to live under a microscope.
Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, better known as Chappell Roan, recently cancelled her appearances at the All Things Go festival in New York City and Washington after being attacked online for not endorsing either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump in the United States presidential election.
“I don't agree with a lot of what is going on with, like, policies. Like obviously f*ck the policies of the right, but also f*ck some of the policies on the left,” said Roan in a TikTok. “That's why I can't endorse. That's why I can't put my entire name and my entire project behind one.”
After this TikTok, Roan posted to her Instagram story letting her fans know she will be cancelling these two festival appearances.
“Things have gotten overwhelming over the past few weeks, and I am really feeling it,” Roan said on her Instagram story. “I feel pressure to prioritize a lot of things right now and I need a few days to prioritize my health.”
This Instagram story announcement came just two days before the New York City festival date.
Some fans defended this decision, like @samannaly on TikTok.
“If you are angry at Chappell Roan for cancelling her All Things Go set, you do not actually care about her,” @samannaly said. “Being disappointed is one thing but calling her entitled and/or selfish is insane. She is a human being, not an object for your entertainment.”
Comments on @sammannaly’s TikTok were divided, with some supporting Roan’s cancellation and others criticizing it.
“People flew out to see her. No refunds, 24-hour notice just because she was ‘stressed’. I’ve been a Chappell Roan defender since day 1, but you just can’t do that to people,” said one comment by @meattkitten._. The comment currently has 1,347 likes and 104 replies.
“People get mad at you if you don’t show up for work. Not sure what’s hard about that,” said a comment from Jenn Carillo (@chingonx_rebelde). Her comment garnered 4,383 likes and 220 replies.
The main theme of the comments is that this is her job and no matter what, and she should be there. That her mental health is not a good enough reason to cancel.
Considering she cancelled appearances, not concerts, I don’t think people can really be upset. If you purchased tickets for the festival, there will still be a whole lineup of other artists. She was going to perform a 30-minute set. If people were paying for tickets, accommodations and more just to see 30 minutes of Chappell Roan, I think that is no one's fault but their own. Artists cancel festival appearances all the time.
Artists have cancelled concerts on the same day of the concert and fans have gotten upset but not to the same scale as Roan. The original TikTok from @samannaly has over 40,000 likes and 6,546 comments. She is not the only person giving her opinion. Whoopi Goldberg even brought up Roan’s cancelled festival appearances on The View.
Roan deserves a break. She has been under a microscope for months. I’m honestly surprised she hasn’t cancelled before this. I feel like people think they understand how it feels to have everyone criticizing your every move, but I couldn’t live like that. If all Roan is asking for is a couple of days off to regroup, I think that is beyond reasonable.
Everyone should prioritize themselves and their mental health. If she doesn’t maintain her mental health, she may never get on stage again. I think it’s important to remember she is a human being in her 20s, learning how to live with her newfound stardom.
