FSU launches new Internet café

Students will have to be careful not to spill their large lattes on the keyboard of the new Internet Café on campus.

Located in the Student Union Building (SUB) building in room SUB1012, across from Forwell Hall and the Out Back Shack, a new Internet Café is being opened for students to causally surf the Internet and drink a coffee at the same time.

Initiated by the current Student Administrative Council, the new location for Internet browsers on campus was funded by the technology fee in student's tuition cost and the FSU.

FSU Operations Manager John b. Young said the FSU is very excited about the café, which will open on Monday, November 27, and plans to officially introduce the café in the New Year.

“It's available to all students at the college to surf the net, do emails, and have a coffee while doing it,” Young said. “We want to test it out, and check it out, and unveil it more formally in the New Year.”

The café consists of 10 desktop computers, all connected to the high-speed Fanshawe network, and is meant for the casual Internet user and not for the purpose of conducting homework.

Indirect lighting, not the usual fluorescent lighting seen throughout most other homework labs on campus, will illuminate the café, while the décor will be more appealing to students.

“We credit this years executive for the design, and colour scheme for the café,” Young said. “It gives a more home-type feeling, and it will be very welcoming to students.”

Young said the café would be open tentatively from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. till 11 p.m., however it will be closed when major pubs are taking place, and when large events are occurring in Forwell Hall.

The café is also accessible for disabled students.

“The first table, ‘Netcafe01', is an adjustable table to accommodate students with disabilities,” Young said.

Young said he wants to ask the student population to show some respect while using the facility, clean up after themselves, and enjoy the new Internet option available to them.
