SAC approves referendum on dental plan

Last week the Student Administrative Council (SAC) sat for their second meeting of the semester and several very important issues were discussed, such as the potential student dental plan, security on campus, and the 2007-2008 College Student Alliance conference, which is being held here at Fanshawe.

First, the BIG news.

Students will have the opportunity to vote in a referendum for the proposed student dental plan, hopefully this January. Twenty per cent of students must vote and 51 per cent of students must be in favour for this dental plan to come into effect, so if you want, or are opposed to, dental coverage to be included in your health plan, at an extra expense of no higher than $80, DON'T FORGET TO VOTE! I will keep you updated on this issue in future weeks.

The 2007-2008 College Student Alliance (CSA) conference is being held here at Fanshawe. Our Executive Council worked very hard to market Fanshawe at this years CSA conference, and they won the bid. Next years conference will be held in February 2008.

Some interesting topics that were featured in the Executive Council speeches were: the new, more comprehensive work-study form, upcoming sports events (including home games), the AIDS Awareness Fashion Show, and several Christmas events such as the Toys for Tots Pub and the Christmas Kick-Ass Country Pub. Check out the Fanshawe Student Union website under the “event calendar” link for specific dates and times.

Some of the SAC members are still looking for class representatives as well…so if you are interested in volunteering, please contact the SAC member for your division:

Jason Wilton brought many student concerns to the table, including safety on campus in the evenings. Also, there are concerns about unanticipated fees popping up in some courses, such as the cost of field trips and extra supplies.

The lack of recycling in the Fine Arts studios is also a concern for many students, and Wilton is hoping to bring recycling bins into these rooms as soon as possible.

Lastly, there is some equipment such as drafting tables and sewing machines that require cleaning and/or repair, and Wilton hopes to remedy this situation quickly.

The second SAC meeting ended with consent items (items to be voted on by council) and new business. A new club was approved and the new clubs policy was passed around. The new clubs policy will be discussed at the next meeting on December 4 2006, 5:30pm in SC2016. Anyone is welcome to attend.
