The threat of nuclear bombs

Be afraid, be very afraid.

Crazed dictator Kim Jung Il has “successfully” tested a nuclear weapon….underground, in his own country. Even though the Stalinist regime in North Korea is one of the original three members of the infamous “axis of evil,” there seem to be very little response from the west, other than the usual, purely symbolic, act of denouncing it.

So far, the “threat” that North Korea poses has not been blown-up and exaggerated by the mainstream media. Most Westerners are not panicking like they used to. When the propaganda machine reported that there was a chance that maybe Saddam might have nuclear weapons, or that perhaps he could possibly get them, most of us freaked out and called for the total destruction of his country. International Law was discredited, and the American military started their campaign of terrorism against the innocent Iraqi civilians. Making no effort to conceal the fact that they were terrorizing the people, the “surgical” air strikes were proudly dubbed “Shock and Awe”.

Even as Kim Jung Il proudly displays his nuclear capabilities and insists that he has the bomb, the right-wing hawks are still chirping away about Iran being the real threat. What a blatant double standard.

Unlike North Korea, Iran is peacefully attempting to meet the energy needs of the Iranian people by producing nuclear power. This is something that most, if not all, industrialized nations of the world have done. Ontario is building more nuclear power plants, where is the outcry and international condemnation?

Iranian President Ahmadinejad is completely right to take the stand he has. Iran has the absolute and undeniable right to enrich uranium to produce nuclear energy in Iran for Iranian people.

The United States is in blatant violation of numerous international laws regarding torture, the usage of chemical and nuclear weapons, depleted uranium, the disregard of civilian life, anti-personnel landmines, funding and training paramilitary death-squads and terrorists, the list goes on.

The American government is open about the fact that they are also developing bunker-busting nuclear weapons, or as the media likes to call them “mini-nukes”. This is the most glaring and obvious violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty, to which the U.S. and Iran are both signatories.

“Under Article 6 of this treaty all signatory states undertake to negotiate toward general and complete disarmament of all nuclear weapons under strict and effective international control.” Not only is the United States blocking any international control of their nuclear weapons, they are not disarming their old nuclear weapons, and they are still building more sophisticated nuclear weapons which they intend to use in future conflicts.

There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that Iran has, or is attempting to develop nuclear weapons. However, there is loads of evidence against Israel, an undeclared nuclear power that refused to sign on to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

It is estimated that Israel has approximately 50-100 nuclear weapons in their arsenal. They routinely bomb civilian populations in the Gaza strip, the west bank, and more recently, Lebanon. They routinely threaten Iran as well, calling the Islamic republic their greatest enemy. When was the last time Iran carpet-bombed civilian centres?

Nuclear weapons are a bad thing, but let's not get carried away here, North Koreas underground test was far better than those the Americans tested on the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki just over 50 years ago.

Israel, a true rogue state, abides by no international laws at all and has enough nuclear weapons to annihilate the Arab world. The United States, another rogue state, that makes up and breaks international laws as it sees fit, has enough nuclear weapons to destroy the entire world many times over.

These undeniable facts makes these two countries the true “axis of evil,” and it is in the worlds best interest to confront them unless they want to see the smoking gun in the form of a mushroom cloud.
