Exec Corner: It's Fanshawe, not Much Music

What makes a good show? Is it the act on stage, is it the size of the crowd, the response of the crowd, is it the sound and lighting?

As I look back at Frosh the Casbah, and try to criticise, I wonder if the program had the energy we were looking for. Needless to say, putting on five live-concerts, comics, blanket drive-ins, a half-a-dozen BBQs and pub nights within a week is a rush for me, but I'm not in the headspace of many students, because of my angle on the whole thing.

So I wonder how Frosh Week was received. The turn out was good, and sales were good, but those are just numbers, it's a bit of a trick to rate the “vibe” or “energy”.

Some of the feedback I have heard is that the groups/bands we had playing were “unknown”, or too obscure for students. And that's when I start thinking about how complacent most of us are, and whether it's possible to please everyone.

I've decided that it's not. We could have put more “Much Music” worthy acts on the bill, but what good is that, when you could just watch it on Much.

The way I see it, this is college, where a lot of great bands have made their start. So that's what we went for, the groups that aren't quite huge yet.

So if you were one to complain, just wait a few years for Bedouin, Shad K, K'naan, Cheap Suits etc to explode, and try to remember them playing on our modest stages around Fanshawe for low ticket prices, because odds are, you won't get that chance again.
