A punchy new workout routine

Here today, gone tomorrow. The fitness world is ever-changing, but one thing remains the same. People need to exercise in order to stay healthy.

A healthy diet is key, sleeping is crucial and living a healthy lifestyle is important, but our bodies were made to move. If they weren’t, we would have no need for knees, hips, shoulder, ankles and elbows.

With the ultimate goal of movement for health, what are the best forms of exercise? The short answer is: whatever works well for you as long as you continue to challenge yourself with a variety of movements.

Fitness 101, your on-campus fitness centre, offers a variety of classes that utilize the body and mind in challenging and fun ways. The best part is, you can get your workout done in under an hour! That leaves plenty of time to study, hang out with friends or head to work.

This week, I’d like to feature one of our new offerings: Tae Bo.

American fitness guru Billy Blanks brought this workout to the industry over 15 years ago. It integrates kicks, punches and defensive techniques used in martial arts. It also helps to create self-awareness, self-confidence, enhancement of martial arts and boxing techniques.

Kirsten Burke is the Tae Bo instructor at Fanshawe and she has trained with Blanks at his master training classes. The music is fast and the moves are fierce, but this workout is truly for anyone.

The routines typically consist of mostly floor work, but light-weight and body conditioning exercises may be included.

Burke will push you to do the best you can possibly do, but will allow you time to work on technique and get conditioned to the point of the advanced participants. It may seem overwhelming at first.

I started Tae Bo for the first time a year ago and discovered amazing things my body was capable of. I’ve been teaching fitness for 15 years and this rejuvenated my routine in exciting ways. I encourage you to try this at least once or for a few times in a row and you’ll be hooked.

There are currently two class offerings on Tuesdays at 4:20 p.m. to 5:05 p.m. and 5:05 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you are not a member, you can try the class for free if you have not previously had a free pass. Day passes are $5.50.
