Health Habit of the Week: “Glamour” at the gym

Q. Do the clothes I work out in really matter?

A. First of all, we commend you for being physically active and working out! However, it is important to wear proper attire for the following reasons:

Breathability allows your body to cool properly. If you're wearing heavy clothing, like a thick sweater, your body heat gets trapped. This can increase your susceptibility to suffering from heat exhaustion. Play it safe and wear light, loose clothing.

Comfort, because, let's be honest, who doesn't want to be comfortable while sweating?

Mobility, because wearing loose, stretchable clothing is important for allowing your body to perform through all ranges of motion. By performing exercises through different ranges of motion, you're increasing your performance abilities and thus your results. Ever hear the phrase, “I can't do that in these jeans?” It applies to the gym too.

Footwear is VERY important! Your joints are going to take a beating while you exercise, so you need to provide them with the best stability possible. Proper footwear gives your feet arch support and ventilation — and no one likes stinky feet! If you are unsure of what the best shoes are, ask the professionals in footwear to get the right pair for you!
