Shiseido’s Lacquer Rouge gives an intense and kissproof lip colour.

Valentine's Day is soon approaching, and now's the time to start planning that perfect outfit and date night. Some would say this can be a stressful process, and the last thing you want to worry about is what makeup you are going to wear and if it will last all night.

If you are just having a night at home, keep the makeup soft and innocent, but if you are having a sexy night out, try a classic cat eye with a daring red lip. No matter what you decide, you need to make sure the makeup lasts with as few touchups as possible. Here are a few star products that are definitely kiss- and Valentine's Day-proof.

When it comes to your foundation, you want to make sure it doesn't smudge off onto your partner and you also don't want to have to constantly powder it. A matte, long-wearing foundation is your best bet because once you apply it, you won't have to touch it again for the rest of the night and it won't transfer onto clothing. Estée Lauder's Double Wear foundation and Revlon's Colorstay foundation are the most long-wearing I've tried. They also offer a very large colour selection, so they are perfect for everyone. However, since the foundations are long-lasting, they can be a bit drying, so a good moisturizer and primer are a must!

For your eye makeup, stick to powder eye shadows (unless they are waterproof cream shadows) and definitely use a primer — the last thing you want is your eye shadow to start fading after an hour into your date. Using Smashbox's Photo Finish Lid Primer will rid of that issue.

As for your eyeliner, stay away from kohl liners as they tend to smudge the easiest and you don't want to end up looking like a raccoon if you get a bit emotional. Try a water-resistant gel/cream liner from brands such as L'Oreal, Smashbox or Makeup Forever. These products also make it very easy to create that perfect cat eye, or a very thin line just to accentuate the eyes.

To fully kissproof your lip makeup, avoid glosses and creamy lipsticks because you will have to constantly reapply them, which is very distracting. Start with a lip stain (Revlon's Just Bitten lip stains are very effective and affordable) and then use a tinted lip balm such as Maybelline's Baby Lips for a cute night in. If you want to amp up the colour, use a lip liner on top of the lip stain and then finish it off with a lip lacquer. Shiseido's Lacquer Rouge offers a huge colour selection and only needs one application for a very intense, long-lasting colour.

To finish off your entire look, I recommend using a fixative spray just so you can be absolutely sure that your makeup will stay put. Lise Watier and Clarins both make excellent sprays that will guarantee a kissproof makeup for a romantic Valentine's Day.
