Fun and Fitness: Test yourself at the Strength Challenge

In real life, he is a geeky news reporter; but when the Man of Steel hears a cry for help, he busts out of the office attire and lets his muscles ripple and shine in that tight blue suit. Clark Kent becomes the fearless Superman, letting nothing but kryptonite get in his way.

I ask you: what's standing in your way? Why haven't you signed up for the Superman Strength Challenge at Fitness 101 in Building J? You don't have to wear a tight blue suit and you don't even need rippling muscles! All you need to do is put your fears aside and challenge yourself.

Feel the exhilaration of pushing your body to its physical limits and surviving to tell the tale. You may have already told yourself, I have no chance of winning, but it's not about that. It's about setting a goal and performing your absolute best. Then, work on building your strength, endurance and power and do better the next time. If you do happen to win a prize — surprise! You are super!

Fitness 101 has been hosting the Strength Challenge for 17 years at Fanshawe College. The event is a collaboration of Fitness staff and Fitness and Health Promotion students working together on concept, theme, exercises, marketing, promotion, sponsorship, registration and testing on the days of the challenge. The theme is different each year to reflect current social or pop culture. Superman is an iconic choice representing strength, power, stamina and courage. “These are all characteristics of a great, satisfying workout,” said Fitness 101 fitness consultant and FHP grad Jasmine Collins. “The strength challenge is a great way to showcase all your hard work in the gym.”

Here's how the challenge works:

1. Register at the front desk of Fitness 101. It's $5 for members and $5 plus a $5.50 day pass for non-members.

2. Sign up for your challenge time. The available time spots are in 20-minute increments between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on November 28 or 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on November 29.

3. For exercise details, check out the Challenge promotion board in the Fitness Centre or ask staff for help. The exercises are: bench press for reps in one minute, box squats for reps in one minute, kettlebell/ dumbbell thrusters for reps in one minute, plank hold on medicine balls for time, and front arm hold for time.

Once you complete the challenge, marked by a Fitness 101 tester, your scores will be tallied and results will be posted by December 3. Only the top three males' and top three females' names in each weight category will be posted, so if you do not place, you can ask Fitness 101 for your individual results and ranking.

If you still need convincing, don't hesitate to talk to the staff and co-op students at Fitness 101. You can go on the days of the challenge and still find an available time spot as there are a few testers available at a time. You can even go at the same time as a friend if you want some direct competition. Save your excuses for when you really need them and take the chance on the Superman Strength Challenge: be a step above the rest!
