Chat With Nat - Help and hope for student with the blues

Dear Nat,
Everything seems to be going downhill for me lately. Focusing on my school work is becoming more and more challenging, I can't seem to get a good night's sleep, I have little to no appetite or will to really do anything, I'm always super strapped for cash, and my closest relationships around me are starting to crumble. I feel like mush but don't know what's going on. Being open about this with my friends is hard for me to do too because I'm a very private person with way too much pride. I need help or an outlet of some kind, but not sure who to talk to without being paranoid that everyone will find out. What should I do? I feel trapped and alone.
Down in the Dumps

Dear Down in the Dumps,
Although you might feel totally isolated right now, just remember that you're, in fact, not alone. As hard as it might be to believe at this time, there are millions of people struggling with similar situations right now. To experience these valleys of discontent and dissatisfaction with your life is completely normal from time to time. The issue becomes abnormal when you begin to feel this way all the time.

I applaud you for already taking two important steps forward: recognizing that something isn't right and attempting to find a solution to the problem. (Do you know how many people can't seem to do that for themselves? Bravo.)

If you're looking for confidential sessions that are free of charge, Fanshawe offers great one-on-one counseling services to its students. Not only does this service help clients identify and make sense of the problems they're currently facing, but they'll also work through a series of steps to help you find a solution.

Additionally, students who have used the personal counselling service have reported a greater sense of comfort as a result of ongoing support and positive encouragement experienced through the sessions.

If you're interested, I'd highly recommend contacting Fanshawe's Counselling and Accessibility Services (located in F2010) via email (counselling@fanshawe.ca) or by phone (519-452-4282 or 519-453- 2826) and booking an appointment.

Feeling better might seem like an unreachable goal right now, but always remember that great happiness takes great effort. A willing attitude, strong support system and an open mind are all essentials when facing what feels like an uphill battle. Believe you'll get through this and you will.
