Turn Boring Spaces Beautiful: Make your dorm room feel like home

Welcome, new Fanshawe College resident students! This year may be a huge change for you, moving away from home and being on your own for the first time! This whole experience can be very exciting yet a little scary.

When I first moved into Fanshawe's rez, one thing that helped me feel at home was personalizing my dorm bedroom.

Residence will be your home for the next eight months. Being a student of Interior Design, I know how important it is to have a space that reflects you. With the rules and restrictions of what you can and cannot do to your generic white dorm room, I have some simple and inexpensive tips on how to make your dorm room feel a little more like home!

The easiest way to personalise your dorm room is to add artwork. This may seem a little tricky, because you're not allowed to drill holes in the wall to install picture hooks. The simple solution to this is to use 3M Command hooks to hang your artwork and photos. These hooks stick to the wall and can be removed without leaving any sort of residue, making it a rez friendly product!

No door on your closet? No problem! One simple solution to covering up your closet belongings is to purchase a tension rod, which does not require any holes to be drilled into the wall, and two curtains that are suitable to your taste. This is a simple way to cover up what is in your closet while still obeying the residence rules!

Need a little extra storage? Adding a nightstand or bookshelf in your room is an easy solution to give you some more storage space. I know from firsthand experience that one of these items can fit into your space without making your room feel cluttered.

Last but not least, one more easy way to add a little more personality to your dorm room is to add an area rug. With everyone having the same generic carpet, an area rug is a great way to add a splash of colour and personality into your space.

You can purchase most of these items to personalise your dorm room at any Walmart, Target or Canadian Tire.
