SMART moms are going back to school

Single Women In Motherhood (SWIM) will be hosting its third annual SMART event, honouring mothers and those pursuing a post-secondary education. Scholarships will be awarded during the ceremony.

SWIM founder and executive director Ann Marie Ricketts said winners are selected through a nomination process. What she looks for in a winner is “a mom who believes in herself. A mom who has gone through the journey. Who's fallen and gotten up. Who has consistently come back at life, no matter how hard things are thrown at them, and who have that determination.”

“[The scholarship] was created to help empower and encourage single moms to give that extra kick to get through their education,” said Ricketts.

The amount of the scholarships is to help mothers in any way to complete their education. “Even if it's $500 or $200, it helps. One book [paid for] is amazing,” she said.

Money for the scholarships is fundraised from organizations within the community.

“People like Sisters of St. [Joseph's], Scotia Bank ... these are the communities that have stepped up to the plate to say, ‘We can do this, we can provide that support for single moms,'” said Ricketts.

Ricketts said that post-secondary education is important now more than ever. “Back in the day, you did not need an education, piece of certificate or that paper to show for you to get a good job.”

The scholarships are awarded in hopes that recipients will achieve their goals.

“[I hope winners achieve] a graduation and a certificate,” she said. “That's what we want to see, is that completion of their program, their certificate on their wall.”

“Rest if you must, but don't quit,” said Ricketts. “When you believe in yourself, anything is possible.”

The event Strong Mothers Achieving Remarkable Triumphs will be held September 28 at the Hilton (300 King St.). Tickets are $50 — call 519-432-5454 for details.
