The Office of the Ombuds is breaking new ground!

Coming into 2013, the Office of the Ombuds positioned itself after completing some key initiatives through recent years. By starting with a business plan in December 2009, the Office of the Ombuds has started various helpful things for students and visitors. A complete review of the Office was completed to ensure everything being done serves visitors providing fair, quality, and timely service.

Vision and mission statements were created for the Office, as well as a slogan: Here for you, in the interest of Fairness! Using these items, the purpose of the Office has been clarified as well as the role of the Ombuds for Fanshawe College.

Starting this year, you are now able to book your own appointment on the calendar of the Ombuds, Greg Hessian. Using the website to book appointments allows the Office to be more effective and efficient with meetings, record-keeping, and statistics. This means the Office will be better suited to help you, the student or visitor, with your fairness concerns.

The Office uses coaching techniques rather than advising students what to do. This allows the visitor to learn a practical problem solving mindset. This is done by working through a problem and creating an action plan. These action plans follow the Office's Principles of Fairness and Duty of Care, as well as the Fanshawe College Rights and Responsibilities Statement. The goal is to resolve conflict type situations, working toward a remedy that is reasonable to all involved.

The Mandate of the Office of the Ombuds has also undergone changes, which will benefit the Office and the College, as a whole. The Office is currently providing presentations to schools to increase the awareness of fairness in College decision-making. The Office remains available to assist all Fanshawe College community members, provided the challenge is a student-related matter. Annual reports may be found online with more detailed information about the Office's accomplishments, as well as statistics. The Office will continually be growing the concept of fairness within the College, and working to better its visitors.
