Athletes celebrate awards night

The Oasis was filled with eager athletes last Friday as the Fanshawe Falcons from all teams gathered to celebrate one another, award outstanding individuals, and wrap-up another superior season for the Falcons.

The most anticipated awards of the night were Male and Female Athlete of the Year, which were taken home by John Mason and Emily Costello.

Mason is a star on the cross country team, where he consistantly brought hardware home to the Falcon's trophy case. Most notably, he led the team to a silver medal at the CCAA National Championships, which was the first time Fanshawe had ever medalled in a national cross country tournament. He also brought home an individual bronze medal.

And between all that running, Mason still keeps up a 3.71 GPA in the Architectural Technology Program.

Emily Costello has been a phenom on both the indoor and outdoor soccer field as captain of both teams, even though this is her rookie year at the college level.

In addition to being an integral part of the Falsons' success at OCAA and CCAA championships, Costello is also a true role model for her teammates off the field. She led the team with fundraisers and organized many team bonding dinners and events.

There were scores of other awards handed out, including each team's recognition of Rookie of the Year and MVP for the 05/06 season.

Other awards included the London Pacers Running Club Cross Country Award, which was presented to Samara Cahais and John Mason.

The Jim Matchett Award recognizing an athlete who has made “noteworthy contribution to the athletics program” was given to Adrian Pytka.

The Les Zoltai award, which recognizes an athlete who contribues not only to provinicial and national sports, but also commits to campus recreation and Student Union activities, was given to Andrew Galloway and Shannyn Clancy.
