Ian Hume scored the lone goal for Canada in an 8-1 defeat to Honduras. The defeat was only one goal away from being the worst loss in Canadian history. The loss eliminated Canada from moving on in the qualifying stages for the World Cup.

Honduras is the murder capital of the world, and the Canadian men's national soccer team can certainly attest to that. The Canadian men only needed a draw to advance to the last stage of qualifying for the World Cup. Instead, they made this entire qualifying campaign a joke to the fans, the country and the players.

This joke lasted a full, dry, 90 minutes. Honduras 8 to Canada's 1.

At the beginning of their road to the World Cup, Canada's performance seemed adequate. Not only did they get the required points to actually finish well, their on-field work was also strong. A great example of this was their home game against Panama, as Canada came out with a 1-0 win. But, in an almost perfect example of their frequent pattern, the return fixture resulted in a brutal 2-0 loss to Panama.

The game against Honduras was marked by horrendous defence on Canada's side. They looked like Toronto FC on most nights with a refusal to play in a coordinated pattern on defense.

On one of the many goals that were scored against them, the ball was crossed into the box off of the goal line towards the Honduran attacker. Every member of the Canadian defence just stared at the ball as it traveled over them. The team was not working together or even working on their own to defend. They didn't look hungry. Meanwhile the attack was destitute. It started with chances but then got worse and worse. Possession was scarce and poorly used.

What really matters is what it does to the sport in this country. This was another failed chance to develop a different mentality about the team. Another failed attempt at making it to the World Cup. The country clearly failed.

However, this could be a starting point for something else. It was clear they didn't have the quality to make it very far but it could very well mean there is more to develop and harvest. The team is bringing in lots of young players to fill voids and enhance their level of play. But there still needs to be a greater movement from the Canadian Soccer Association to give players better opportunities to grow and prosper. This team simply proved that nothing is working and maybe a blowout loss is something that will help the program in the long haul.
