Scary Movie Marathon

Curl up with some popcorn and your favourite blanket and get comfy for a marathon night of scary movies. Oh, and don't forget to set the mood by dimming the lights and locking the doors.

1. The Hills Have Eyes (2006)
A family on a road trip to California gets stuck in an old nuclear testing zone after their car breaks down. All hell breaks loose when they quickly realize that they aren't the only ones in the deserted wasteland. This flick's on the more gruesome side, and it will be sure to have you wishing you'd left the lights on.

2. Trick 'r Treat (2007)
Multiple stories come together in one big scary Halloween flick. A high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer, a college virgin finds the guy of her dreams and a group of teens play a prank that goes too far while the night's festivities continue throughout the town. You'll love this movie, if you can follow along with the interwoven stories.

3. Freddy vs. Jason (2003)
Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees work together (sort of) to terrorize and kill the teenagers of Elm Street. Freddy, who resurrected Jason to kill for him, realizes that he must take down Jason in order to become the biggest bad guy in town. This Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th collaboration should have you hiding under your blankets in fear.

4. House on Haunted Hill (1999)
A millionaire offers a group of people $1 million if they can survive spending a night in a haunted house. Sure, it's a pretty basic plot, but things start to get strange as the group learns more about the house's creepy history.

5. Pulse (2006)
This remake of the Japanese film Kairo focuses on a computer hacker who accidentally unleashes a mysterious and terrifying virus. After his suicide, a group of his friends are forced to work together to stop the virus from destroying everything. If you're looking for a movie that offers something a little different, Pulse is a great place to start.

6. 28 Days Later (2002)
Jim wakes up from a 28-day coma to find England overrun with zombie-like creatures. After being rescued from a horde of the creatures, Jim is forced to find a way to escape England with a small group of survivors. This is a great movie, even for people who are sick of the zombie craze.

7. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Okay, I know it's another oldie, but trust me on this one. A group of people stuck in an old farmhouse have to deal with a zombie outbreak after the radiation from a fallen satellite causes the dead to rise. I know these older flicks might not be your thing, but watch it to get caught up on zombie history or you can check out the 1990 remake instead.

8. The Ring (2002)
Journalist Rachel Keller investigates a videotape that is somehow causing the deaths of a few teens, including her niece. The viewer supposedly dies seven days after watching the tape. If this is true, Rachel will be forced to save her son's and her own life. The movie's not super scary, but it's definitely a movie marathon must-watch.

9. The Shining (1980)
Perhaps best remembered for Jack Nicholson's haunting smile, the original version of The Shining will have you wondering why so many classic horror movies take place in isolated hotels. Jack Torrance brings his family along when he takes on the job of winter caretaker for a hotel with a disturbing history. Jack slowly develops a bad case of cabin fever and eventually goes completely (and murderously) insane. Jack's son Danny discovers he has a supernatural gift that could save him and his mother from Jack.

10. Psycho (1960)
This classic is considered one of director Alfred Hitchcock's best films. Marion Crane is on the run after embezzling $40,000 from her employer. She ends up staying overnight at a nearly deserted motel where she meets the peculiar owner, Norman Bates, and his mother. The film features the brief interactions between the three and the horrifying aftermath. Older movies may not be up your alley, but Psycho is a must-see for every horror movie connoisseur.

If scary movies aren't your thing, here are a few alternatives:

Ghostbusters
"If there's something strange in your neighbourhood... who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters!" Re-watch an old favourite this Halloween!

It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!
If Ghostbusters isn't your thing, the Peanuts gang is a sure-fire alternative.

Shaun of the Dead
A creative parody of the George Romero classic, Dawn of the Dead.

Scary Movie
A parody of every horror movie. Ever.

The Addams Family
A great way to celebrate a twisted Halloween, without the spooky or gory element.
