Woodstock campus gets bizzy with new program

Fanshawe is expanding its academic wings by introducing a new entrepreneurial business program at its satellite campus in Woodstock.

Beginning this September, Fanshawe's Oxford County campus will cut the ribbon for its new Business — Entrepreneurship and Management (BEM) program. The two-year full-time program will feature preparatory studies for students to succeed as business owners and managers, leading to an Ontario College Diploma. It is also open to international students.

The program was developed to train the next wave of business owners in proper business practices in response to a statistic that showed that a large portion of small and medium enterprises fail to survive in a competitive market. According to the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, 99.7 per cent of employer businesses in Ontario in 2009 were either small or medium businesses. However, according to Statistics Canada, almost half of businesses in Canada eventually fail because of poor management. That's not too encouraging, but prospective owners who wish to enroll in this valuable program may change the status quo.

Donna Derer, chair of Fanshawe's Oxford County Campus, acknowledged the current condition of small and medium enterprises and said she believes that the new program will help a great deal. “The economy is struggling right now, but we know this is still a great time for entrepreneurs to be active. We want to give our graduates the tools they will need to be successful, whether they start their own company or become managers somewhere else. This program is about empowering them to thrive as business leaders.”

The program includes teaching on market research, feasibility, advertising and marketing, and social responsibility. Practical experience and networking opportunities will also be available through the College.
