Long Distance Love: Valentine's Day, long distance style

There are two distinct schools of thought on Valentine's Day. There are those who think that Valentine's Day is a holiday created by greeting card companies to get your money, and there are those who think that it's a day devoted especially to love. No matter which of these camps you fall into, Valentine's Day has the potential to be one heck of a bad day if there are miles between you and your loved one.

Here are some tips to help you celebrate Valentine's Day without your special someone this year (because if you're going to be with them, then you don't need my help to make it a special day):

- Acknowledge the day. Whether you ever truly celebrate Valentine's Day or not, the truth is, there are a ton of people who do. They will be constantly reminding you that it's a day all about love. It will take a lot of stress off the situation if you acknowledge that, yes it is Valentine's Day, instead of explaining to everyone who crosses your path why you don't celebrate it.

- Make plans to talk to you partner. If at all possible, have a phone date, a Skype date or whatever kind of date you can. If there is no possible way to actually talk to your significant other on Valentine's Day, send them a letter or card in the mail beforehand with specific instructions not to open it until Valentine's Day. Sharing even a small interaction with your partner on this love-centric day will brighten both of your moods.

- Make plans. Whether you want to make plans with your family, friends or just yourself, plan something special for Valentine's Day. Maybe you want to host a big family dinner, or maybe you want to get together with all your single friends and protest the whole concept of Valentine's Day. Do whatever would make you feel the happiest and take your mind off the fact that you can't be with you sweetheart on this particular day.

- Look forward to your next visit. This may sound obvious, but instead of focusing on the fact that today you're not together, focus on how great it will be the next time you are together. Attitude can be everything when you're in a less than ideal situation and focusing on the good instead of the bad will help you get through the day.

I hope you all enjoy your Valentine's Day, whether you're alone or with your paramour! I, for one, will be camped out on my couch, in my favourite sweatpants, alone, watching Casablanca.
