Interrobang at NXNE: Bobby's Diary #1

Dear Interrobang - The Hyatt Regency Hotel in Toronto was completely overrun with people on Wednesday morning, as I showed up at 9:30 a.m. or so to attend the Level Up Your Social Media workshop, led by Lucia Mancuso and Michael Doran of The Blog Studio.

In addition to being grouped together with a number of interesting people and learning of their businesses and the ways they're using social media to accomplish their goals, Lucia and Michael led a fascinating discussion about employing the social media Big Four - Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Flickr - and the valuable hidden potential that each has.

I mean, they each have obvious uses, but there's more to consider just under the surface. Hopefully some of those techniques can be implemented at Interrobang now that we're exploring the online arena and rich media like video stories more and more these days.

Bobby Foley and Alan CrossAnd I met Alan Cross! He was conducting interviews with artists every ten minutes through the morning, but took a couple of minutes to meet me and another fan nearby.

I was too chicken to introduce myself a month ago when I got the opportunity to attend the listening party for the new Matthew Good record, because shortly after the event began and the cameras started to roll, I dropped and spilled a beer all over MIA grad Dondrea Erauw in our seats in the front row.

A few moments later, an alarm went off on my cell phone, derailing the interview a second time in ten minutes. The first ten minutes. Two things happened as a result - Matt promised to single me out for the rest of the evening, and my beers came stopped with wine corks from then on.

I mentioned these things to Alan when I met him at the conference, and he just laughed and assured me that little mishaps like that make interviews more realistic and human, and not to worry. But at least now that I've met him, I'm not simply that spilly guy from Parkdale in May.

The festival wears on, however, and there is music to be seen and heard. My full NXNE coverage - including photos, videos and stories - can all be found on Twitter (@FSU_Bobbyisms).
