Soccer women return to final four
The Fanshawe women's soccer
team advanced to the Ontario
Colleges Athletic Association final
four soccer championships for a second
straight season, and put some
history to rest in doing so. In a rematch
of last season's provincial
championship, Fanshawe shut out
the Durham College Lords by a final
score of 3-0.
The Falcons were powered by a two-goal performance from Newmarket, Ontario native Victoria Morrelly, as well as an insurance goal from London native, Lia Barkauskas. After breaking the hearts of the Durham Lords one season ago in the Ontario final, the Falcons once again played the role of heartbreakers. This time they succeeded in not only ending Durham's season, but also ending their impressive streak of 13 straight years of qualifying for the Ontario final four championships.
In qualifying for the championships this past weekend, the Falcons have set themselves up for a tough semi-final match against the undefeated Algonquin College Thunder. The Thunder come into final four action leading the OCAA in goals scored with a whopping 48 goals. Fanshawe head coach Martin Painter hopes his team's defensive ability and work ethic will prevail as Fanshawe looks to defend last season's championship. The championships took place in Vaughn, Ontario at the Ontario Soccer Centre.
