Modern makeup goes back to the '50s for fall

Ladies, ladies, ladies!

The '50s look is still in, and we're seeing a modern woman's makeup intertwine itself with the classic '50s housewife look. To truly look your finest, make sure you've crossed each of these off your beauty must-have list.

1. Brow pencil: One of the biggest beauty essentials that goes un-bought! For some unknown reason women do not spend their time shaping and enhancing their brows. As of right now high-arched, neatly defined brows are in. To achieve such a brow, make sure when shaping that the arch is just past the pupil of your eye. Use a pencil that is two to three shades deeper than your hair colour to achieve a strong "popping effect." While on the topic of brows, do me a favour, do not over-pluck. This is far too common a mistake women make. The brow is the frame of the eye, so if it is thin and hookshaped, it's not truly framing your eye. They're simply drawing more attention to themselves and pulling away from the eyes.

2. Lip stain: The lip stain saw the height of its popularity two seasons ago and while we thought it was shriveling away, it now seems to be making a comeback. However, this time around, no coral or bright pink shades necessary. The talk of the town this runway season was rich maroons and dark rosés. Colours that reflect plump and healthy lips were popular on the runway. So go on, buy a colour that makes lips look so luscious nobody will be able to resist kissing them.

3. Bronze shadow: I find that bronze shadow gets hated upon more than it should. Believe it or not, it is definitely a fall beauty essential. The great thing with a bronze shadow is it doesn't contain bright undertones. Its pigments are rich and closely related to the pigments in all skin tones. Yes, all skin tones! Weird, huh? Bronze is a colour with primarily yellows and browns. Every bronze shadow has a different ratio of the two colours; however, they are both present. Make sure you're getting the right colour pigment proportion. It's possible for it to be worn on olive skin tones, deep skin tones, and more. Even the fair-skinned can rock this look, just make sure not too overdo it. No need to apply it like Mimi from The Drew Carrey Show.

4. A suitable compact: The look of the '50s housewife is not one that should be accompanied by cake makeup. Let us see the real colour of your skin — whatever it may be; it's about a natural look. Don't apply an entire compact of bronzer to your face if you're pale; it's too much. And don't try to lighten your skin tone if you have a darker complexion. Beauty is about enhancing what we have, not changing it because we don't like it. However, there will always be a bronzer fiend, so for the girl who refuses to put it down, I would like to introduce you to the friendly alternative known as peach blush. It will still give you a sun-kissed glow without making you look like you're from Jersey Shore.

Note: This season the look on the runway for skin has been matte, so carry blotting sheets or dust on a translucent powder to eliminate shine.
