Men and women get smashed for different reasons; study

Sloshed, hammered, loaded, liquored or shit-faced, either way you say it, chances are you have all spent a night or two paralyzed by bountiful amounts of booze. But guys have different reasons for doing it, according to a recent study.

The drinking habits of University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) students are the subject of a new study that explores the differences behind gender specific attitudes towards the dedication to the drink. The study is based on the preliminary research that found men binge drink to feel macho and women drink to feel equal to men.

CROSSROADS, a substance abuse prevention and education program at the UNCW, received a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to research gender differences in drinking. The proposal, entitled “Changing a High-Risk Drinking Culture through the Lens of Gender,” was one of 155 submitted applicants who vied for 20 grants to prevent high-risk drinking among college students.

“Male and female students have told us that they drink for different reasons. said Rebecca Caldwell, of director of CROSSROADS, in a myDNA.com interview. “Each gender truly has its own drinking culture. Advertisers have addressed it for years.”

According to Statistics Canada, binge drinking is the consumption of five or more alcoholic beverages at one sitting. A 1998/99 Canadian survey found that 44 per cent of men ages 18-24 binge drink at least once a month, compared to 23 per cent of women in the same age demographic.

“Young people tend to be the binge drinkers. We know they drink, and they drink to get drunk,” said Pauline Newton, president of the London Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

“Boys will be more likely to drive a vehicle impaired. Girls are more likely to get into a car with an impaired driver, especially if it is her boyfriend.”
