Women's volleyball team finding their way

In 1972 the last of the American ground units left Vietnam, Ceylon became a republic renaming itself Sri Lanka and Pong ushered in the video game era. This also was the last time that a Fanshawe volleyball team won OCAA gold.

Fanshawe's Keely Armstrong goes up to spike the ball versus Sault College during a match last week. Fanshawe won 3-0 to improve to 3-1 on the seasonThat's right, 1972. Thirty-seven years ago the Female Falcons brought home the gold, but perhaps this desert will turn into a paradise? If you could extrapolate from the statistics then it would appear that Fanshawe is on the right track.

Currently the lady Falcons are tied for second in the league with six points, only four points behind the leading Cambrian Golden Shields. And when the team steps out onto the court, you can sense their quest for gold. They have so far proven what hard work and determination on a fairly new team can provide top-notch results. In both Wednesday's and Sunday's games the girls dominated the court.

“We played really well today,” said assistant coach Vaughn Peckham following Wednesday's game. “In the second set we made some mistakes, but we were able to pull together and win the next two.”

And that drive did not stop Wednesday night, as it was definitely apparent on Sunday afternoon as well. The Falcons showed up ready and enthusiastic to play, and after three sets they had another win.

The team is displaying a lot of heart, drive, and the determination that is necessary to win. When they combine this with two experienced coaches as well as great technique and execution of plays it makes for a phenomenal outlook on the rest of the season.

The Falcons have much to look forward to this year and hopefully they will be able to bring home the gold after 37 years.
