Lady Falcon's soccer team looks to continue strong season

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association regular season is already winding down in women's soccer, and sitting at the top of the pile is none other then the Fanshawe Falcons.

The women's team boasts an impressive record of 5-1-2 (wins-losses-ties), with the only defeat coming at the hands of the Humber Hawks (9-0-0). The Falcons have outscored their opponents 22-11 and their 17 points in the standings has them sitting atop the West division a comfortable five points ahead of Conestoga with three games remaining.

After a 5-2-3 record and a second place finish a season ago, the Falcons have improved leaps and bounds offensively. It was Alana Cornet and Stephanie Oliveira a year ago carrying the bulk of the offense for the team, scoring eight and six goals respectively. After those two though, the scoring was virtually non-existent with no one else recording more than one goal. This season the goals have been pouring in from three main sources. Victoria Morelly, Jory-Lynn Uyl and Lia Barkauskas have found the back of the net a few times (Morelly - seven, Uyl - six and Barkauskas - four goals each) which has led to the increased success of the squad on the offensive side of things, thus far.

If there is one area of improvement for this team it would be defensively. Though their 11 goals against is respectable in the league, after only allowing four total goals against last year, it has to be the one area the Falcons can look at to continually improve upon.

If the Falcons are to compete for and win their first championship since the 05/06 season there is going to be some big hurdles to overcome, namely Humber. With the lone defeat for Fanshawe coming at the hands of Humber via a 5-1 romp, the Falcons are going to have to match teams punch for punch on offense if they want to compete in the upper echelon of the league. Another team that Fanshawe may have their hands full with is undefeated Durham College. The 6-0 Durham Lords have been nothing but impressive this season, despite playing considerably fewer games than the majority of the league, they have a league leading 41 goals for and a jaw-dropping only one goal against.

Things are looking up for the Fanshawe squad with a lot of first year players, but as the season winds down it's going to be up to those veteran players to step up their game and lead by example if they are to turn their successful season into a deep playoff run.

To finish out the season the Falcons have two games remaining as of press time, wrapping up their season on Wednesday October 14 when they travel to Conestoga. The team has no home games remaining so the next chance you'll have to catch some action will come playoff time.
