Show me the money! Students wanted to apply for free cash

Welcome new and returning students! I just have one question for you… What's your money dance? Now, if you're not sure how to answer this then you need to get to know your Awards and Scholarships office here at Fanshawe College.

Where to find us and how to contact us:

To get the boring (yet still important) stuff out of the way, here are a few definitions that you will need to know:

Bursary: a gift of money given to a student who demonstrates financial need.

Scholarship: a sum of money awarded to students to help finance further education.

Award: a sum of money (but not always cash) given to a student in recognition of outstanding academic, athletic or other achievement.

This week we are letting you know ‘everything you wanted to know about bursaries but were afraid to ask.'

Purpose — meant to supplement a student's resources not replace them

Where to apply — www.yourmoneydance.com

Application process — review the advertised bursaries and determine which one(s) you are eligible to apply for. Click ‘Apply' and follow the steps.

For the referral only bursaries, you will need to email scholarships@fanshawec.ca or call 519-452-4466 and request to have an application filed for you.

Tips on completing application:

- Be sure to report all resources including, but not limited to, the money used to pay for your tuition and living costs that occurred prior to your arrival on campus, parental/spousal assistance, RESP/RSP withdrawals, savings and OSAP;

- There are no prizes for finishing the fastest; take your time and answer each question completely and honestly;

- There is no other job out there that will pay you as well as this…for the average half hour it takes to complete the questions

Taxes — the best part! This is now truly free money. The tax man is no longer coming to take some of it away…at least under this government it's not. Of course, you still need to show it on your tax return. And no worries, we'll get you the tax slip you need (i.e. T4a) so you may show ‘the man' how much money you have that he can't take.

Donor-Funded Bursaries: these bursaries have been established by community partners for specific groups of students in line with the interests of each donor. In other words, if the donor wishes to support a student born on a Tuesday under a blue moon then this is the criteria we attempt to work with. Obviously, that is an exaggeration but I think you know what I'm trying to say.

Application period — for most donor-funded bursaries, the Fall term application period opens September 8, 2009 and closes September 25, 2009. Others will be available at the start of the Winter and Summer terms.

Approvals — the review of these applications cannot begin until the application period closes. Please allow a minimum of three weeks after the application deadline period before decisions are made.

Presentation — funds handed out at a private presentation or directly out to the students as approved. However, if you've gotten behind and have outstanding tuition fees owing then the bursary money is used to pay down these amounts first.

Questions — contact Awards & Scholarships

Fanshawe College Student Assistance Bursaries: this bursary was established by the Ministry and is funded through a percentage of tuition fees that colleges are required to retain to help students with financial need. Again, this bursary is only to support the resources you already have, like your savings, OSAP, a line of credit, or help from home. The main difference between this and the donor bursaries is that it is open to all students (yeah!) rather than specific groups. You must still be able to show financial need.

Application period — September 22, 2009 to October 21, 2009 (it will open again in Winter)

Approvals — Applications are reviewed in the order that they're received. If there are lots of applications, it will take a bit longer. You'll get an email to your Fanshawe Online account to let you know the answer.

Presentation — Typically bursary cheques are handed out directly to the students as approved but the same ‘if you've gotten behind' rule applies.

Questions — contact Financial Aid Office at 519-452-4280.

I would like to end this week's column with a contest. So, the first 10 students who come to the Awards & Scholarships office and mention this article will receive a copy of “The Debt-Free Graduate: How to Survive College or University without Going Broke”. This is a humourous yet informative guide to financing your education that will give you even more reasons to show us your money dance!

Next week's topic: Scholarships. The big money!
