The ‘every girl's dream' designer

Although I wouldn't exactly call Paris Hilton my style icon, she was recently photographed in a dress that had me head over heels in love with. After a few fervent minutes of Googling, I discovered the dress was by a designer named Jenny Packham. Being a borderline obsessive label junkie, I was thrilled to discover a new designer as I have never heard of Jenny Packham before. Although specializing in bridal wear, the label also has a ready-to-wear line.

The Spring/Summer 2009 collection features mini dresses to ball gowns and lives up to my every excited expectation. Solid sorbet coloured gowns from peach to coral to tangerine were highlighted with turquoise and amethyst bejeweled necklines. Ruffled, tiered mini dresses accented with satin bows and waist-cinching details also dazzled with intricately patterned Swarovski crystals. Bright, but soft, floral patterns also ruled the runway in the form of chiffon ruffles, and some designs incorporated elaborate yet understated beading. A few dresses even had matching chiffon appliqué flowers with tiny crystals in the middle.

The runway was fittingly pink and the entire collection just made me think of cupcakes with all the ruffles and icing coloured tiers. Tremendously feminine, this collection could have been inspired by every little girl's dream of growing up and becoming a fairy princess. Pink satin platform pumps completed the look and added a longer leg line when paired with the very mini dresses.

Not a newcomer to the game, Packham graduated from the prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art in London, England. Internationally recognized for her talent, Packham has been awarded with Hollywood Style Designer of the Year, International Couture Bridal Designer of the Year and British Bridal Dress Designer of the Year. Her garments have also been selected for designer infatuated movies including The Devil Wears Prada and Sex and the City. Although impossible to find in Canada, some of the garments can be found at Bergdorf Goodman in New York and at Harrods of London.

Hilton isn't the only celebrity follower and Packham's designs frequent the red carpet. Vogue has written a feature article on the designer and I'm sure she gets much more publicity over in the UK.

A deserving do-gooder, Packham has set up a bursary at Saint Martins for up and coming British designers. If the graduates create collections anything like Packham's, success will be sure to follow and London may be the new Paris.
