Tweens swoon over Twilight vampy romance

Twilight

Forbidden love in the form of teenage angst, makes this bestselling book turned movie, enjoyable but clearly for a younger audience.

Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) leaves Phoenix, where she lived with her mother and step father, and moves to a small town called Forks to live with her father. Shy and quiet, she feels apprehensive at her new school, but finds new friends easily. Everyone seems to like Bella, except for Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), the school's uncatchable catch, who seems repulsed by her smell.

After a failed attempt to get out of their class together, and a week away from school, Edward suddenly starts to show an interest in Bella. Their hot and cold friendship takes a drastic turn when Edward miraculously makes it all the way across the parking lot in just a few seconds to save Bella from being killed by an out of control van. Not only is he super fast, but he is super strong, stopping the van with his bare hand. Confused and desperate for answers, Bella refuses to let her hero get away with saying adrenaline was the reason for his super abilities.

After another rescue, Edward finally starts to let Bella in, even after she discovers the reason behind his strange abilities and distant behaviour. Edward is a vampire, and has been for over a century. He lives with six other vampires, the make shift Cullen family, who are “vegetarian”, meaning they only feed on animals. Bella is not scared at all and is almost drawn to Edward more because of his undeadness. Edward decides to throw caution to the wind and break all the rules by stepping out with Bella and letting the whole school know that he has finally found his match. He even brings her to his house for dinner, not as dinner, and to a family baseball game. Yes, baseball.

Unfortunately, the love between a vampire and a teenage girl is doomed from the beginning, especially after a vicious vampire, James (Cam Gigandet), who does feed on humans, catches a whiff of Bella's scent. Bella must now flee, turning her back on everyone who cares about her, and with Edward's help, hopefully get away from the tracker before he kills her and her family.

Why is the story of a girl falling in love with a vampire so popular?

There was Buffy, now a new show on HBO called “True Blood”, and finally Bella and Edward. I guess it's the idea of forbidden love, and the hope that somehow they can find a way to be together. Well, this movie did a good job of expressing the emotional rollercoaster of teen love. Relatively all age friendly until the very end, Twilight is clearly meant for a younger audience. Lots of scenes of intense staring without words and while not boring, it is quite slow.

Both of the main actors, Kristen Stewart (Into the Wild) and Robert Pattinson (Harry Potter 4) did a great job. I recommend this movie to anyone classified as a tween or those who have read and love the books, as I have heard the books are better.

Final Words: Saw it. Liked it. Watch out for Cam Gigandet, he's going to be huge.
