Lesnar stuns Couture to conquer UFC

The next generation of heavyweight UFC fighter has arrived.

Despite counting out Brock Lesnar in his fight against Randy Couture, he proved me, and a lot of other MMA fans wrong by disposing of the old champ in the second round. It was obvious from the beginning that the strength and size of Lesnar would be too much to overcome for the 45 year-old Couture.

I truly feel this won't be the last we see from Couture and I won't be surprised if we see a rematch between the two in mid to late 2009.

But for now Lesnar is UFC heavyweight champion of the world, and as weird as that is to say we should get used to it. The fact of the matter is that a good, big heavyweight fighter is better then a good, small heavyweight fighter. Thus, the new generation of what we are to see in the heavyweight division:

Brock Lesnar:
The new UFC heavyweight champion doesn't need much explanation. He's got beastly size, (he has to cut weight to make it to 265 lbs), and he's got the speed of a lightweight fighter, and has a background and growing skill set that matches the pedigree of many other fighters in the UFC and other MMA fighters around the world. Lesnar doesn't need to learn great Jiu-Jitsu; he just needs to learn how to defend it.

Cain Velasquez:
With only four professional fights, Velasquez has four knockout wins, with all of them coming in the first round. Talk about a scary fighter to face. Velasquez stands at 6'2” and fights at 245 lbs. The important factor here is that Velasquez isn't a flabby 245lb man; he's very stalky and thick, which poses big problems strength wise for most of the other fighters he would face. If Velasquez continues his tear through the heavyweight division ranks, look for him to fight for the title in late 2009.

Shane Carwin:
This man is relatively unknown but is undoubtedly the future of the heavyweight division. Standing at 6'4” and a muscular 255lbs Carwin is a scary man to just look at, let alone fight. Currently Carwin holds a record of 10-0, with all wins coming in the first round. The important factor here is the diversity of the wins, five by submission, and five by knockout. The versatility of Carwin makes him a force every time he steps in the cage. To go along with everything, the man punches like a train; in his fight Christian Wellisch he brutally knocked him out in 44 seconds in a punch that sounded more like a transport truck hitting a brick wall at full speed.

The future of the heavyweight division will be these three fighters, along with the more popular fighters that we already know such as Frank Mir, Gabriel Gonzaga, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and even though he's still 45 years old, Randy Couture still has some fight left in him as well.
