Fashion's latest detail is taking flight; plumage is flocking the season's smartest items from handbags to boleros and even jewellery. Fully feathered dresses and jackets took centre stage at Burberry Prorsum, while Ralph Lauren put a spin on the classic feather adorned fedora hat. Models were even seen floating down the runway in feathery evening gowns at Monique Lhuillier's New York Fashion Week show.

In short, feathers were featured prominently on the Fall/Winter catwalks and have been receiving praise from both fashion critics and fashion followers alike. There is something retro yet current about feather detailing and I can't get enough.

Feathers of all varieties have been popular fashion accents during many different eras. History tells us that feathers have always been a highly coveted luxury, symbolizing status and economic stability. Plumage has held a central place in traditional Native costumes from headdresses to ornaments. During the Victorian era, fancy hats were decorated with large ostrich and other exotic feathers. In the roaring ‘20's the flappers sported opulent plumes in their head piece. Throughout history, feathers continued to embellish clothing, accessories and hats up into 1950's. This year, in particular, they're making their biggest comeback!

Some favourable feathers to be on the lookout for are ostrich, peacock, pheasant and marabou.

Here's some unique and new ways to incorporate a little bit of nature into your wardrobe, as seen on the runways and worn by the A-list trend setters.

I came across a stellar website called shopban.do.com that I suggest checking out. Ban.do offers beautiful, handmade head bands and hair clips embellished with feathers, flowers, beads and other unusual materials. What's more, each headband comes with an adorable Hiku poem! These accessories have a higher price point starting at $75 and up. If you're willing to cough up the cash for one of these pretty pieces, you can be assured that no one will have anything like it!

For all those jewellery lovers, Aldo has a great pair of feather earrings, Stutterfield, for a bargain price of $7.98. These feather light earrings are embellished with beads and come in a cool purple or black colour. Wear them with casual or dressy clothing, either way; they'll add a little uptown sophistication to your attire!

One last feathered piece that I came across is an artfully avian change purse from modcloth.com, for only $12.99. This leather change purse features a brilliantly colourful peacock and chunky leather stitching. It's the perfect way to maintain your keen fashion sense right down to your pocket change!

As you can see, there isn't one specific way to wear the feather phenomenon. Be creative, and make this trend your own! Glue some plumes to a hair band or a clutch. But please steer clear of feather boas, those things are far past obsolesce and should never be revived!
