It's beginning to look a lot like...

As I sit here writing this column in the quiet of night, I get to thinking just how busy I will be over this next month and a bit, and also how busy everyone will be with the Christmas season slowly creeping up on us. Now I am one of those people who enjoy the sights and sounds of the season to a certain extent, but I know many people do not. Take anyone who works in retail, and I have too, so I think I am able to offer an opinion on it. I know many people who work in malls, and at various stores who despise this time of year, it means they are busier than ever, they work more hours than usual, and in many cases they don't encounter some of the friendliest people either, and that was the reality when I spent three Christmases in retail.

Second, and I know this is something we can all agree upon, is the excessive amount of Christmas music that you cannot get away from whether it be in the stores, or on the radio. And working for radio stations myself, I know how excessive it can be. I enjoy the familiar tunes, but there is only so many times you can hear the same song over and over again.

Third, and I know this argument if it hasn't come forward yet, I guarantee you it will in the not too distant future, the argument of the greedy nature of the season. Now as a kid growing up I can say that my Christmases weren't bad, but they weren't extravagant either. The thing I enjoyed about them was not only the presents I received, but the time I spent with family and friends. That same reality holds true for me today, with the exception of the presents changing and also the fact that I can enjoy time off work to spend with family and friends.

As I mentioned earlier there are people out there who do not endorse buying gifts and the “corporate” nature of the season, and they're entitled to hold that opinion too, but I know many who quite enjoy buying presents, regardless of value. I also know many who obviously do not like the religious significance of the season, and that's fine too, just as long as we don't continue to habitually use the term “Happy Holidays” as we have been doing over the last number of years.

Also the issue of whether it should be called a Christmas tree or a holiday tree is the most ridiculous argument of political correctness I have ever heard. I know it may seem like a season that is exclusively for someone of the Christian faith, but there are many other faiths which embrace the season for it's overall significant regardless of religious belief.

So my aim for this first article as VP Internal for the Fanshawe Student Union is to show that yes there maybe some not so good sides to the upcoming season, but there are many good ones too. I would hope that all of you are going to head home for Christmas and spend time in the company of friends and family. I also know that many parties celebrating the season will also be held, just remember to not drink and drive and have an enjoyable break from this very busy time of the year. At this time next month we will be well into the season, and just remember during this busy time of year to enjoy the spirit of the season and take some time for yourself to take it easy and relax.
